Dr. Bette Loiselle and I teach a class called “Fundraising for Tropical Conservation & Development Professionals”, and one of our assignments is for students to explore the costs and benefits of crowdfunding by running a project of their own.

This semester our lab meeting will be partially dedicated to people sharing tools they use in the field, doing analyses, in lab, in life….whatever. These can be to increase efficiency, make fieldwork simpler, tame their email, etc.

The paper a group of students and I wrote in which we evaluate the gender composition of 10 editorial boards in environmental biology has just been published in the open access journal PeerJ.

I started posting data from papers to Dryad and elsewhere a while back, but I finally made a commitment too start posting the code used to manipulate, analyze, and plot the data as well.

I just wanted to give a shout out to a great open-access journal that fills a much needed empty niche for field biologists – lists of biological inventories and notes on the geographic distribution of any taxon.
